One of Namibia’s well known Djs, Dj Sergio with 20 year’s experience in the making! Known for his passion for music at Club London, Big Fat Pool Party, Colour Party and most recently the Amped Music Festival held in Windhoek, Namibia.
Dj Sergio was born on 8 September 1979, in a little Portuguese island in Madeira called Caniço. Not long after he was born, his family moved to South Africa where he spent a good part of his youth. At the age of six, he already showed a strong interest in music. The then tiny tot would make his way onto a chair to reach for his dad’s old records and play them. “Music has always been a part of my life. It’s always been there.” Says DJ Sergio.
The next move came when they made their way to Namibia where he realized his dreams and love for Djing. It all started when DJ Sergio was around the age of 16 years old. A friend was selling his djing equipment so he immediately grabbed the opportunity to get started. This was a sign! He worked hard to pay off his new “prized possessions”. Between juggling school and his social life, this meant getting an after school job and doing as many school “sokkies” as possible. No amount of time or effort was ever a factor for him. This youngster was determined and nothing was going to get in his way, not even having to push the old blue and white kombi down the road whenever it broke down in the middle of nowhere after his gigs. It has all been a growing and learning experience. An amazing journey which has brought him to where he is today.
“I remember on the last few days of school whenever there was an opportunity I would take out my portable radio and entertain my school mates with the latest music of that time.” Says Dj Sergio when asked about his school days.
This thirty six year old Portuguese disk jockey not only boasts good looks, a witty character and a humble approach to life, but exuberates an incredible talent and love for the art of music. His ever-growing success ranges not only from the younger clubbing generation but also to the older more mature crowd. With 20 years of experience, it is no surprise that all who hear him play immediately become a fan of his work.
“Being a DJ is not just about being in tune with the music and latest technology” says Sergio. “It’s about being in tune with the crowd and being flexible to all genres of music.” You name it! This is definitely a master of versatility and wisdom! “You have to really love what you do!”
He has worked with and opened up the floor for internationally recognized artists such as Scooter, Dj Costsa (Bump Series), Rodger Goode, Pierre Pienaar, Paul Almeida, Spiro (Trance House Series). MartinK (Germany), Taucher (German DJ and producer), Dizzy (Spectrum Series), Speedy, and Derek “the Bandit”, amongst many others.
When not djing or running his own automotive parts business, this family man loves nothing better than to spend time with his wife and two children. He is also quite a gadget man when it comes to all things PC and electronics.
When asked what advice he would give to young djs out there who are looking to learn the trade, Dj Sergio says: “It’s a lot of time, dedication and money that goes into this art. A lot of guys give up and don’t put in enough effort. It’s hard especially if you have a job and a family. You have to stay up to date with the music and most importantly believe in yourself!”
“When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life.” – Greg Anderson
